  • Feasibility study on alternative drives

    Customer: Public transport authority

    SCI Verkehr was commissioned by a public transport authority to prepare a feasibility study on the planned use of alternatively powered rail vehicles. The focus of the analyses was on the economic feasibility of hydrogen and battery-powered trains in terms of operation, energy and infrastructure. A life cycle cost (LCC) model from SCI was applied. The aim of the study was to determine the economically and operationally optimal drive technologies against the background of the existing and future infrastructure of various networks, for example with regard to charging and refuelling processes.

  • Evaluation of an annual business survey of the logistics industry in Hamburg

    SCI produces an annual evaluation of data on the general economic situation of companies in the logistics sector in Hamburg. The data is compared with the SCI LOGISTIKBAROMETER and thus placed in a nationwide context. Members´ assessments of the work of the commissioning initiative are also surveyed.

  • Research project on the further development of single-wagon transport in Germany

    With the NRW.LOGISTIKINDEX, SCI Verkehr provides a quarterly evaluation of business surveys in the transport and logistics sector based on the monthly survey of the SCI Logistikbarometer.     On behalf of the "Initiative Bahn NRW" of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, SCI Verkehr conducted a study concerning the challenges of the demographic change for the local rail passenger transport in North Rhine-Westphalia. Based on previous research, SCI Verkehr developed demographic and further input parameters for a traffic prognosis concerning the local rail passenger transport up to 2030. The results of the prognosis were prepared for discussions with different players.

    A transport authority required a risk analysis concerning various tender models in local rail transport for its partners. SCI Verkehr compared various possibilities regarding their implementation probability and possibilities to reduce the risk for the transport authority.

    On behalf of the Hans-Böckler Foundation, SCI Verkehr analysed the industrial and operational challenges and development corridors of the railway industry in Germany. The focus of the analysis was placed on the comprehensive assessment of the German railway industry, an evaluation of the main sales regions as well as important market drivers and trends. Based on these values, SCI Verkehr identified development corridors for supporting the railway industry. The results of the study were also incorporated in the so-called "Rail Summit" of the federal government in the summer of 2015.

  • Cost-benefit study RRX

    Customer: State of North Rhine-Westphalia

    On behalf of the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Building, Housing and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MBWSV) and CP Compartners, SCI Verkehr developed a cost-benefit study for the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX). For this, SCI Verkehr assessed the macroeconomic benefit of the RRX for NRW based on the areas of mobility, economy, environment and social affairs. In addition to evaluating existing data regarding e.g. transport and population development, experts from various institutions were interviewed. The results were published in a study and further discussed with the experts.

  • Report to strengthen rail freight transport in NRW

    The Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) is the most important rail project in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and, starting 2017, will even gain in significance in public perception due to beginning infrastructure expansion as well as delivery of new electric multiple units. Therefore, on behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Urban Development, and Transport of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and CP Compartners, SCI Verkehr accompanied regional conferences on the topic RRX. For this purpose, SCI Verkehr examined transport-related, economic, as well as environmental benefits for the areas Rhineland, Rhine-Ruhr and Westphalia and discussed the results among experts.

  • Updating Logistics Competence Atlas for the Ruhr District

    The Logistics Competence Atlas for the Ruhr district clearly presents all logistics competences in the field of logistics for the Ruhr district. The atlas compiled by SCI Verkehr was presented for the first time in the summer of 2004. In May 2005, SCI updated the atlas which is being used as an instrument for site marketing. Projekt Ruhr is thereby in a position to present possible investors with an updated overview concerning the logistics site North Rhine-Westphalia in events planned for 2005 (e.g. Munich Transport Logistics).

  • Market Entry and support of a network of nine regional railways and a logistics service provider

    The first step is based on a master plan developed by SCI Verkehr. The plan outlines how single vehicle transport could be developed in North Rhine-Westphalia by creating a Network Organisation for Railway Logistics (O.N.E. North Rhine-Westphalia). The publication and market positioning are agreed upon in close cooperation with the participants and are presented at the 2002 VDV Annual convention. They are accompanied by the production of necessary presentation documents, a brochure, a topic-specific mailing to decision makers in the region and potential cargo transport clients in North Rhine-Westphalia. A customer drop-in center for the coordination of these activities is opened.

  • Logistics Center Cologne/Bonn - location profile and competitive position

    The goal of the consulting activities is the development of a location profile for the logistics region of Cologne/Bonn. The investigation focuses on the possible unique selling points of the planned end-of-runway logistics park in Troisdorf Spich, and its positive effect on the entire region?s economy. The competitive position of such a logistics park and the potential target company will be evaluated with a small strategic analysis of selected competing regions

  • Feasibility study for the creation of a logistics competence center (InLog) in the eastern Ruhr district

    In the context of the eastern Ruhr district?s ?Initiatve Logistik,? the Hamm, Unna and Dortmund Societies for the Promotion of Economic Development are planning a model project for the development of a logistics competence center called ?InLog.? Within this competence center, the service areas of companies interested in settling in the area would be combined. A feasibility study outlined company services in concrete terms and examined inter-community hosting possibilities as and well as potential private sector participation. In addition, the study determined sensible legal- and corporate models, including a cost estimate and funding possibilities. It also proposed a master plan for the realisation of the project.

  • Schienengüterverkehrstag 2001 (Railway Freight Traffic Conference 2001)

    Because of the traffic problems on the road and the expected growth of traffic much hope, particularly in the field of freight traffic, is directed towards to the railways as a carrier for solving the transportation problems of the future. This was the background for the State of Sachsen-Anhalt to bring together, within the scope of a technical conference, decision makers in politics and science, consignors, and the transportation business, in order to develop initiatives for improving the efficiency and competitive capability of the railway freight traffic. SCI Verkehr has developed and implemented an agenda for this conference. It became possible to win high-ranking speakers from the economy, science, and politics. With more than 300 delegates the event was well received. Because of this success the State of Sachsen-Anhalt has decided to make the Railway Freight Traffic Conference a regular event. The Conference 2002 is scheduled for 5 and 6 September 2002.

  • IRIS - Innovative Rail Intermodal Services

    Based on the theoretical concept of the OSIRIS Project a couple of vital players have agreed to perform the follow up Project IRIS. IRIS composes of three demonstration Projects and an overall co-ordination. SCI Verkehr is Test Site Leader of the BeDeNl-Demonstration part and has taken over overall supervision role on the technical achievements of the two other demonstrators as well. The idea of the Demonstrators and in particular the BeDeNl demonstrator is to show the impact and potential of intermodal rail services on short and medium distances in the hinterland of the Port of Zeebrugge in relation to regions Aachen-Düren and Düsseldorf. For that reason a demonstration train has been operated exploiting the potential of regional railways

For this purpose information was collected concerning the priorities on the side of Serbia for the reconstruction of the infrastructure, sources and conditions of financing and also concerning the interests of the NRW economical community in reconstruction in Serbia.

The main objective of the OSIRIS concept is to improve the price- quality ratio of intermodal transport. The target of OSIRIS is to create new and competitive offers by integrating and connecting new into existing technical components and to innovate the operational and organisational issues. By means of specific market information and contact networking, organisation of political support, assistance with project acquisition and search for cooperation partners in the target countries, consulting and assistance in conjunction with financing and aid concepts, in particular through European programs, assistance at location by means of own coordination offices in the countries, the market entry in the target countries of the participating NRW companies is to be made easier; as a contribution to improving the competitive edge of the NRW region in conjunction with the expansion of the EU towards the east.     The German railway network can be used by all certified railway companies. Many companies within and outside of Germany frequently take advantage of this right. Railway safety may not represent the same level of priority for every user. The study investigates whether or not current guidelines are sufficient. More specifically, it looks at the degree to which set rules can ensure a high safety standard in light of the conditions in a liberalized market.   • eDex - the e-logistics index of the LOG-IT Club e.V.

    The eDex is an indicator calculated at regular intervals, which is compiled and maintained by SCI Verkehr on behalf of the LOG-IT-Club e.V. The eDex indicates the economic situation within the industry and the future situation in the e-logistics industry. In June 2004 the eDex started surveying 150 companies representative of the e-logistics sector with regard to size, products and other indicators. The methodology of the analysis is partly based on the Ifo Business Climate Index as well as the SCI/logistics barometer. The eDax is not only used to query short-term, cyclical expectations, but also long-term, growth-related trends.

  • International production relocation and outsourcing strategies in the rail industry

    The situation for inland waterway crafts in Poland was researched and analysed for the BMVBW, which was examining the situation of inland waterway crafts in selected European countries. The profitability of inland waterway crafts is generally represented on the basis of specific individual cases.

  • Implementation of the Permanent Secretariat for the Pan-European Traffic Corridor IV

    The permanent secretariat of the steering committee of the Pan-European traffic corridor IV is supporting the steering committee in respect of operating and subject matter preparation and execution of its work. That is to foster the development and utilisation of the traffic corridor by suitable activities, planning and information and to adapt its operational and traffic-related characteristics to the present and future requirements. The secretariat is working closely with the members of the steering committee, of the steering group railways of the corridor and with the facilities and authorities of the participating countries. It is preparing analyses and recommendations for the governments of the countries and the European Commission and explores financing facilities for development projects.

The analysis of the application of funds for short-distance passenger transport in the federal states is of particular importance. As part of the project for Allianz pro Schiene, SCI Verkehr examined the application of funds and evaluated this in a publicly accessible final report.

  • Extension of an intermodal transport transhipment terminal in a German domestic port

    The operator of a transhipment facility for intermodal transport in a German domestic port has seen considerable volume increases in its transport relationship with a regional company of the automobile industry. The operator wants to face this development with larger transport and warehousing capacities and therefore intends to introduce more efficient transhipment equipment and change the layout of the terminal areas. SCI Verkehr GmbH is creating an appropriate application for financial aid as per the German federal government?s guideline for intermodal transport, and is supporting the preliminary examination to clarify the question of location.

    IG Metall commissioned SCI Verkehr to document the sector conference of works committee in the railway industry which took place in Berlin on 14th and 15th February 2006. Alongside documenting the presentations, SCI Verkehr also compiled the working group results as well as providing a summary of the contents of the speeches contributed. In addition, the sector conference was also photographed with the aim of compiling comprehensive conference documentation.

  • Circle Line / Public-Private-Partnership in public rail transport

    "Circle Line" is the first rail transport project in Germany to be realised primarily as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). In a consortium comprising DEPFA BANK, the law firm Kapellmann und Partner and the engineering office Vössing GmbH, SCI Verkehr is subjecting the plans to a "PPP suitability test" and preparing the realisation of the first construction phase up to the tendering procedure. SCI Verkehr is carrying out the project management and market research as well as addressing potential interested parties.

    In January 2005, the Ministry for Economics, Mid-sized Companies and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia started the project appeal ?logistics of mid-sized companies? (LogMit ? Logistik in Mittelstand). By means of this appeal, projects are to be generated which will support small and medium-sized logistics companies in terms of structural change in the second target area of North Rhine-Westphalia. The projects financed will be predominantly concerned with equipping logistics companies with state-of-the-art IT and telematics solutions. Within the framework of LogMit, the project organiser ETN of the Research Centre in Jülich is responsible for technical handling incoming orders from companies. For ETN, SCI Verkehr is taking over the technical support service of the petitioner in the initial stages, as well as the contextual assessment of incoming proposals.

  • Restructuring of port concept in North Rhine-Westphalia

    Within the scope of the Dortmund project, the Dortmund Economic Development Corporation has identified the logistics sector as one of the most important up-and-coming markets in the city. For this reason a cluster manager was appointed who is responsible for maintaining stocks and the relocations of logistics-related industry. Through contacts in Korea, a delegation of the Korean International Logistics Council was encouraged to come to Dortmund. Within the scope of this visit, SCI Verkehr is developing a specialist event on the subject of the ?logistics market Korea? and is responsible for the entire event management, the selection of speakers, inviting sector specialists and hosting the event in Dortmund.

  • Technical/economical assessment of new development and upgrading of a testing centre

    Within the scope of the research project of the Hans Boeckler Foundation, SCI Verkehr GmbH is analysing the impact of internationalisation on the prospects of the medium-sized railway industry in Germany. The focus is set on Eastern Europe. Using three case studies, potential changes in value creation structures will be presented and innovation requirements from the point view of the supply industry will be analysed and assessed. The report is going to be presented in the scope of a congress towards the end of 2007.

The method was developed within the scope of a project of the Federal Ministry of the Environment for Allianz pro Schiene e.V. in cooperation with HSH Nordbank and IZT in Berlin.

  • End of Runway Logistics - market targeting by suppliers

    In the future, air freight services will be provided more and more as complex logistical solutions within the scope of contracted logistics projects. For sites located near international airports this offers the opportunity for new settlements and therefore to generate new jobs. On behalf of a company for economic development SCI Verkehr GmbH is investigating the possibilities for bringing contracted logistics projects relating to air freight to the site. For the initial review of the situation SCI Verkehr carried out interviews with the leading providers of air freight services in Germany. From this review we will develop a strategy for the next steps for the company for economic development.

  • Strength/weakness analysis of logistics in Baden-Württemberg

    The logistics sector is one of the leading sectors in Germany. For a state like Baden-Württemberg, the strengths of which lie in a number of technological and industrial sectors such as micro-system technology, mechanical engineering and the automobile sector, logistics are of particular relevance as a trans-sectional function. At the same time, the past focus on purely technological issues has led to logistics not being perceived as a core segment. The Baden-Württemberg Department of Trade and Industry has therefore assigned SCI Verkehr compile a strength/weakness analysis regarding logistics in Baden-Württemberg. The objective of the study is to highlight the importance of the industry and identify obstacles for Baden-Württemberg in order to provide the industrial companies situated there today with the optimum conditions for their day-to-day (logistical) work. As a result, SCI Verkehr is going to formulate a logistics strategy for Baden-Württemberg and identify potential flagship projects.

  • Consultancy services and assistance in updating a concept for waterway transport and ports

    In cooperation with project partners, SCI Verkehr revised an already existing waterway and port concept. We concretised and adjusted the transport targets and principles of the state government, created a new chapter entitled ?Transport and Logistics?, added the chapter ?Environmental/Climate Protection? and derived possible contracts or manageable political concepts for action for the state government from the possible options for action. The new concept was aligned with the port industry and federal government?s master plan for transport and logistics. The aim of the concept was to clarify the importance of inland water transportation and ports for Germany.

  • Model corridor Rotterdam - Genoa

    The Rotterdam - Genoa axis is going to be developed into the first major European corridor to use ETCS/ERTMS. SCI Verkehr assisted a leading industrial company in developing the research project for testing ETCS/ERTMS. We analysed the assistance criteria and evaluated them for the concrete project concept, we identified and brought in project partners, compiled the necessary application documents and accompanying documents in cooperation with the client and ensured communication with funding institutions.

  • Analysis of logistics sites focusing particularly on rail connections

    Sidings and direct railway connections have played virtually no role at all when marketing sites over the past years. With the rising problems for road freight transport (traffic jams, transport capacity bottlenecks), logistical concepts making use of the railways are becoming ever more interesting for the freight shipping industry. On behalf of a transregional company for economic development SCI Verkehr is examining three former industrial sites with regard to their logistical suitability, taking into particular consideration the tracks existing at the sites. The result of the study is a marketing concept focusing specifically on those companies with a tendency to transport goods by rail.

  • In-depth analysis of suitability of a site with regard to industry structure

    SCI Verkehr investigated a former industrial site?s suitability as a logistics site. In order to support the political and planning discussion concerning this site, SCI Verkehr compiled settlement scenarios for the various industries in which ideal types of logistics centres were modelled for the respective industries. The parameters of the models were the size of the plant, lorry transport, car transport and the number of workplaces. In addition, on the basis of the scenarios, constraints in the surrounding transport network were identified and a proposal made for optimising access to the site.

  • Competency atlas for logistics in Baden-Württemberg

    SCI Verkehr developed the contents of a competency atlas for the logistics sector in Baden-Württemberg. This competency atlas presents a compendium of the particular skills present in a logistics region. One particular feature of the Atlas is its depth and breadth, in other words the quantity and complexity of the information presented. Using the tool provided by the competency atlas for logistics in Baden-Württemberg on the basis of the strengths/weaknesses analysis for logistics, the Department of Trade and Industry has the opportunity to gain respect in the expert community on both a regional and national level.

    SCI Verkehr surveyed the members of ?Logistikinitiative Hamburg? on its business development over the past year (2007) and their expectations for the coming year (2008). The results were compared with the monthly analyses of the Germany-wide SCI/logistics barometer. This comparison gave rise to the economic barometer for logistics in Hamburg. ?Logistikinitiative Hamburg? uses this barometer as an important indicator for the development and success of its own activities.

  • Cluster management NRW "logistics state" (LogistikLand NRW)

    In March 2007 the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia decided upon a new ?cluster strategy? within the scope of its economic policy. Within this strategy, logistics have been defined as a key "distinguishing" cluster. LOG-IT Club e.V., a logistics network in the state of NRW, took over on 1st February 2008 the management of the NRW logistics cluster under the title "NRW logistics state" (Logistikland NRW). SCI Verkehr was commissioned by LOG-IT Club e.V. together with the association Verband Verkehrswirtschaft und Logistik NRW e.V. to provide professional support for this project. The core of the project is to create a logistics community in NRW, support the regions in promoting the area and handling important logistical issues of the future such as human resources and logistical spaces.

  • Logistical site expertise for an administrative district

    For the purpose of establishing expertise as a basis for site marketing in the logistics sector, data and facts on the site were collected and processed and competitive analyses were carried out with other regions. In addition to information already known, SCI Verkehr processed the average transport prices for six selected example routes and verified these in discussions with local logistics companies. The further processing of statistical indicators such as the labour market/skilled personnel, structure of the distribution of commercial industry in the administrative district, existing networks and procurement markets for industry and trade ultimately led to a derivation of the logistical marketing strategy.

  • Cooperative logistics planning in the southern metropolitan area of Hamburg

    Customer: Association of north German administrative districts

    In the administrative districts of the southern metropolitan area of Hamburg, there is significant potential for the settlement of logistics-related businesses because of the proximity to the sea ports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. The administrative districts therefore wanted to develop recommendations for the development of business locations for the logistics sector in the southern metropolitan area of Hamburg together in the model project KOPLAS. Together with planning company Planquadrat Dortmund, SCI Verkehr developed recommendations for the regional authorities and construction planning authorities for the development of business locations for the logistics sector which are compatible with the geographical area. Starting from a demand analysis, SCI Verkehr identified the general and specific requirements of the logistics sector as well as regional planning on the locations and potential fields of conflict. From this, concrete recommendations were derived and usable guidelines compiled for settlements of this type. In this way, the districts concerned and the state of Lower Saxony as the provider of funding received a generally applicable instrument for future location planning in the logistics sector.

  • Future market trends in European railway transport

    SCI Verkehr analysed the current structures in the core European markets for rail passenger transport as well as the medium-term and long-term megatrends. SCI Verkehr compiled detailed information on the relevant companies, their market shares and their economic development. As the main conclusion, SCI Verkehr identified possibilities for action to support the players in the co-determination process, especially with a view to describing options for safeguarding employment conditions.

    SCI Verkehr supported a private railway company in the strategic and operational preparation of a bid for transport services in Germany. The aim is to submit an attractive, innovative and cost-efficient offer for rail services, on the basis of which the client will be successful in the competition for the transport service contract. SCI Verkehr performed the conceptual and technical planning, the editorial preparation and operational and organisational support.

  • Cooperative development of logistics in the metropolitan area of Hamburg (KOPLAS)

    On behalf of the lower-saxon counties in the Hamburg metropolitan area, SCI Verkehr and Planquadrat Dortmund developes recommendations for the development of logistics sites and summarises the results as a code of practice for subsequent projects.

  • Cooperative planning and assessment of downstream motorway-related infrastructure equipment - preliminary study

    Customer: Authority for regional planning

    The aim of the project is the derivation of a regionally tailored planning and assessment of downstream infrastructure equipment for existing and new motorways. The planned main study should include a comprehensive assessment of the current situation coupled with a stock evaluation or a risk assessment, a regional labour market forecast, a future demand forecast for business and logistics companies locating along the motorways, the naming of specific business segments for which moving to the location mentioned would be suitable, a regional concept for industrial or commercial areas as well as recommendations for municipal urban land-use planning and business development. The preliminary project serves to define the suitable project design: Specification of the basic issues and the project planning, the methodology and the procedure. The result of the preliminary study will be a project application on the basis of which an application for the granting of subsidies from the responsible federal state will be formulated and filed.

  • Specialist support of Initiative Bahn in North Rhine Westphalia

    Together with CP Compartner, SCI Verkehr is looking after Initiative Bahn NRW.     SCI Verkehr prepared a study concerning supplementary plans of local transport in Westphalia-Lippe along four RRX corridors in Westphalia. The effects of the plans on mobility, economy and the environment in Westphalia-Lippe were examined. Included were, inter alia, analyses of passenger transport potentials, travel times, commuter traffic, connections to the other forms of public transport and environmental impacts. The results were prepared in a recipient-oriented way and were published by the PTA Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe.

  • Monitoring regional rail transport tenders Germany

    On behalf of a transport industry association, SCI Verkehr compiles an overview of all German regional rail transport tenders from 2016 to 2025, which is updated on a regular basis. Focus is placed on current wage and social standards, in particular. The SCI DATABASE, in which all announced and expected regional rail transport tenders are compiled systematically, serves as basis for this analysis.

    On behalf of an authority, SCI Verkehr developed and implemented a new quality management system for regional and commuter rail transport contracts. The customer´s aim was to use this quality ranking for an image-building publication. In the context of modelling, relevant valuation parameters were defined and evaluated according to their significance to passengers. Comparability of different transport operations posed another challenge.

    A German municipality is in possession of extensive track facilities at a local industrial area (industrial main track). This infrastructure has not been used for freight services for many years. In the meantime, an investment backlog has arisen, and the track systems are currently not usable. In order to support a council decision on further action, SCI Verkehr is to examine the prospects of the industrial main track.

  • Cross-border regional analysis on logistics

    A German-Dutch border region wants to logistically reorganise. For this purpose, SCI Verkehr was commissioned to conduct a detailed regional economic analysis with a Dutch partner. The analysis is based on statistical data and a survey of business enterprises.

    On behalf of a public transport authority, SCI Verkehr benchmarked different draft valuations in European regional rail transport tenders. In addition to analysing methodological approaches to valuation of concepts during the tendering process, SCI Verkehr also investigated how promised services during the contract period can be monitored.
