Together with partners, SCI Verkehr is supporting a globally active logistics group in the strategic reorientation of its transports towards more rail transport. The activities are taking place in the context of implementing the group's CO2 targets. In the process, the relevant transport markets are analysed and, as a result, options are examined, e.g. for the development of own capacities, partnerships or acquisitions.

On behalf of a company outside the sector, SCI Verkehr GmbH has organised a one-day workshop to make rail vehicle manufacturing processes transparent and assist the client to become familiar with the sector.

Benchmark of different passenger vehicle procurement models

Customer: European railway undertaking

On behalf of a European railway undertaking, SCI Verkehr conducted a benchmark of different procurement models of passenger vehicles. Focus was put on allocation of roles and responsibilities of essential stakeholder manufacturers, transport companies and rolling stock maintenance companies. Different models were discussed and assessed in the context of a workshop.

SCI Verkehr supported a financial service provider with a regular high-level monitoring report on the European rolling stock market. In the scope of the project, SCI Verkehr provided a report on a quarterly basis including the most important events with a focus on railway operators, manufacturers and leasing companies.

For improving its acquisition and sales performance, a financial service provider specialised in the railway segment needs more market transparency in local rail passenger transport. SCI Verkehr elaborated an overview of the 50 most important passenger transport operators in Europe, its key figures and ownership structures.

Customer: European freight wagon lessor

SCI Verkehr carried out an annual assessment update for a European freight wagon fleet (intermodal wagons). It was assessed on the basis of the IVS 2020 standards.

Valuation of dual-mode locomotive fleet

Customer: Leasing company

On behalf of a leasing company, SCI Verkehr evaluated the market environment and the possible applications for dual-mode locomotives. Both flexible application possibilities due to the dual-mode drive (electric or diesel engine) and the respective application advantages of four and six-axle locomotives were examined in more detail.

Value analysis of modern electric locomotives for operation in Europe

Customer: International leasing company

On behalf of an international leasing company, SCI Verkehr assessed the asset value development of electric multi-system locomotives over their lifecycle. The examination used the ?Asset Value Tool? developed by SCI Verkehr and included both an analysis of the technical vehicle value as well as statements about the possible re-use of the locomotives in other countries. The expert appraisal was complemented by a detailed analysis of various types of vehicle with different power systems and country packages and a price benchmark for modern electric locomotives.

Validation of internal valuation assumptions for rolling stock

Customer: Leasing company

In the context of a cross-border, in-house transaction of rolling stock of a European leasing company, SCI Verkehr validates assumptions for an internal assessment system based on the income based DCF method (Discounted Cash Flow). Fundamental assumptions of the valuation model are checked for plausibility and are briefly assessed with regards to content. Rolling stock of the considered fleet is operated in Continental Europe and the UK.

Examining the development of employment in logistics in the Ulm and Westschwaben region with a comparison over five years. SCI Verkehr is examining both the development of employment in the core sector of the logistics industry (transport/transhipment/warehousing) and also the development of employment in other industrial and commercial companies with logistical activities.

Assessment of maintenance capacities in North Rhine-Westphalia

Customer: Medium-sized transport company and vehicle maintenance provider

A medium-sized transport company is looking to assess developments in the short-distance passenger transport market and their consequences for maintenance in North Rhine-Westphalia. The following targets are of paramount importance: 1) analysis and assessment of basic conditions of the short-distance passenger transport market; 2) processing market developments in the short-distance passenger transport market; 3) deduction of demand potential for maintenance work. With the available survey, SCI Verkehr GmbH is compiling the basis for these assessments in June 2006.

Feasibility study for the creation of a logistics competence center (InLog) in the eastern Ruhr district

Customer: Hamm Society for the Promotion of Economic Development

In the context of the eastern Ruhr district?s ?Initiatve Logistik,? the Hamm, Unna and Dortmund Societies for the Promotion of Economic Development are planning a model project for the development of a logistics competence center called ?InLog.? Within this competence center, the service areas of companies interested in settling in the area would be combined. A feasibility study outlined company services in concrete terms and examined inter-community hosting possibilities as and well as potential private sector participation. In addition, the study determined sensible legal- and corporate models, including a cost estimate and funding possibilities. It also proposed a master plan for the realisation of the project.

Process optimisation at a logistics site

Customer: Global player in the food industry

A central production and logistics site of our client showed ongoing logistical deficits: long waiting and processing times for lorries and out-of stock situations affected the performance of the site. At the same time, the client intended to integrate a smaller site from the local area, in order to raise the performance of the site concerned. SCI Verkehr was commissioned by the company management to analyse the main hurdles for a better performance of the site, present ways for improvement and, in cooperation with the company, implement the required measures. The main aim was to accelerate processing times. For this purpose it was necessary to remodel the logistical processes, together with staff on site. As part of an "operational excellence process", the consultancy and support from SCI Verkehr largely aimed towards activating employee expertise at the site. In this way, the upcoming changes in staffing were communicated and established, enabling sustainable optimisation of processes.

Evaluation of different effects of Digital Automatic Coupling (DAK) on the performance of rail freight traffic

Customer: Railway undertaking

On behalf of a railway undertaking, SCI Verkehr is analysing the effects of the introduction of Digital Automatic Coupling (DAK) on the performance of rail freight transport. As part of a meta-study, SCI Verkehr summarises the results of various studies on the DAK and its effects in line and shunting operations and evaluates them with regard to an increase in capacity after the successful migration of the DAK after 2030.
