For the purpose of supporting the development of a product in the railway technology industry SCI Verkehr performed an analysis of customer requirements as well as a technology benchmark. We investigated products with similar functions from the leading markets for railway technology such as Europe, Russia, China, India and Japan, and identified innovative solutions from other technological sectors (defence technology, shipbuilding, aerospace, bridge construction, etc.), which could be adapted for railway technology.

Market analysis of the current inventory of rail vehicle seats and procurement forecast up to 2010

Customer: Private sector

On behalf of an international component supplier, SCI Verkehr is analysing the current total number of seats for rail vehicles in Europe, Asia and the CIS states including a development forecast up to 2010. This is regionally differentiated by individual markets and segments. The future sales volume was examined with a forecast horizon of 5 years for the following differentiated segments: DMUs and EMUs, high-speed trains and passenger coaches. The industrial company is provided with the resulting concrete statements regarding sales potentials by market region and vehicle segment.

On behalf of an European leasing, SCI Verkehr analyses the Polish railway market. Focus is put on reviewing rail freight transport and mainline locomotive markets. Furthermore, leasing rates of the most common mainline locomotives in the Polish market are assessed.

On behalf of a leasing company, SCI Verkehr analysed new three-axle diesel shunting locomotives with regard to their possible remaining value. On behalf of a public transport authority, SCI Verkehr benchmarked different draft valuations in European regional rail transport tenders. For this purpose, SCI Verkehr analysed tender documents and conducted expert talks with authorities and transport companies. In addition to analysing methodological approaches to valuation of concepts during the tendering process, SCI Verkehr also investigated how promised services during the contract period can be monitored.

Implementation of the Permanent Secretariat for the Pan-European Traffic Corridor IV

Customer: Federal ministry for transport, building and housing of the Federal Republic of Germany (in co-operation with the ministry for economy and medium-sized businesses, energy and transport of the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia)

The permanent secretariat of the steering committee of the Pan-European traffic corridor IV is supporting the steering committee in respect of operating and subject matter preparation and execution of its work. That is to foster the development and utilisation of the traffic corridor by suitable activities, planning and information and to adapt its operational and traffic-related characteristics to the present and future requirements. The secretariat is working closely with the members of the steering committee, of the steering group railways of the corridor and with the facilities and authorities of the participating countries. It is preparing analyses and recommendations for the governments of the countries and the European Commission and explores financing facilities for development projects.

LCC-/Feasibility Study of Modern Freight Wagons

Customer: Federal Ministry

In the context of a research project, SCI Verkehr analyses the efficiency, i.e. Life Cycle Costs (LCC) of different freight wagons in operation. Therefore, a LCC model is designed which particularly assesses the use of innovative components in an economical manner. Not only investment and operating costs, but the entire freight wagon in operation is assessed. In doing so, the cost/benefit analysis is not restricted to wagon owners, and advantages for operators, shippers and the environment can also be taken into account and evaluated.

Model corridor Rotterdam - Genoa

Customer: Global player in the rail industry

The Rotterdam - Genoa axis is going to be developed into the first major European corridor to use ETCS/ERTMS. SCI Verkehr assisted a leading industrial company in developing the research project for testing ETCS/ERTMS. We analysed the assistance criteria and evaluated them for the concrete project concept, we identified and brought in project partners, compiled the necessary application documents and accompanying documents in cooperation with the client and ensured communication with funding institutions.
