SCI Verkehr has been conducting a member survey regarding the economic development of the logistic sector in Hamburg on behalf of the Logistikinitiative Hamburg since 2009. The collected data is checked against the SCI/Logistikbarometer and put into the national context. This survey was conducted once again in 2016 and was presented at the initiative's general assembly.

Growth strategy for an international railway industry company

SCI Verkehr supported an international company rail industry in developing a medium-term growth strategy. Based on a portfolio analysis, the segments railway infrastructure and systems technology of global markets were analysed. In addition to determining current market volumes, the market development of these segments was predicted up to 2020. In a second step, SCI Verkehr analysed relevant companies and appraised them with regard to their growth dynamic.

On behalf of a global railway technology company, SCI Verkehr analysed the worldwide market for rail vehicle leasing and the involved players. SCI Verkehr compiled a detailed fact sheet with all relevant characteristics such as vehicle fleet and ownership structure. The final document is used as a basis for the strategic alignment of the railway technology company in this market.

As the basis for strategic planning, a globally active supplier in the railway technology sector commissioned SCI Verkehr to compile the relevant market figures for the most important sales regions. As well as a list of fleet stocks, we carried out an analysis of the procurements of recent years and a forecast of the market development until 2011 for the individual vehicle segments.

Asset valuation Electric Multiple Units (EMU)

Customer: Railway operator

SCI Verkehr calculated the fair value of various types of new electric multiple units (EMUs) for an operator in regional rail transport using the DRC method. The focus of the analysis was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the new vehicle concepts of various manufacturers. In addition, SCI Verkehr analysed market developments in German regional rail transport and long-term deployment perspectives for the fleet.

On behalf of a financing bank, SCI Verkehr continuously assesses a fleet of electric multiple units. Focus is put on performed maintenance and repair work as well the condition of the vehicles.

Asset valuation of electric locomotives

Customer: European railway company

SCI Verkehr evaluated new electric locomotives for use in continental Europe. The valuation was carried out using the Depreciated Replacement Cost (DRC) method. SCI Verkehr examined the supply and demand situation of the assets in their respective markets with a focus on the open-access market.

Conception and implementation of two workshops "Optimisation in Logistics"

Customer: NEW.S

In 2004, SCI Verkehr developed a ?logistics report for the food industry in NRW? for the social partner project Nordrhein-Westfälische ErnährungsWirtschaft e.V. (NEW.S). This includes a number of optimisation approaches and recommendations for action, which reflects the complexity of the demands on logistics in the food industry. Since 2005, NEW.S and SCI Verkehr GmbH have been carrying out a series of workshops entitled ?Optimisation in Logistics? with company representatives in order to intensify the dialogue about these issues in the sector. For two further workshops in autumn 2006, SCI Verkehr is taking over the entire content preparation and management. This includes concept development, detailed planning, acquiring speakers and the presentation of the workshops.

Quality Management of regional and commuter rail transport contracts

Customer: Regional and commuter rail transport authority

On behalf of an authority, SCI Verkehr developed and implemented a new quality management system for regional and commuter rail transport contracts. The customer´s aim was to use this quality ranking for an image-building publication. In the context of modelling, relevant valuation parameters were defined and evaluated according to their significance to passengers. Comparability of different transport operations posed another challenge.

Innovative drives for rail vehicles

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, SCI Verkehr investigated the applicability of innovative drives for rail vehicles that run on non-electrified lines. In addition to economic efficiency, changes relevant to the environment (e.g. emission reduction) were also evaluated.

Strategy development own fleet

Customer: Global player in the beverage industry

A global player in the beverage industry operates its own truck fleet in order to distribute its products in Germany. SCI Verkehr was commissioned to develop a strategy for the fleet´s further development, taking into account external influences (e.g. transport market) as well as internal structures. The process was closely coordinated with the customer and employee representatives and a joint implementation process was agreed upon.

Feasibility study on alternative drives

Customer: Public transport authority

SCI Verkehr was commissioned by a public transport authority to prepare a feasibility study on the planned use of alternatively powered rail vehicles. The focus of the analyses was on the economic feasibility of hydrogen and battery-powered trains in terms of operation, energy and infrastructure. A life cycle cost (LCC) model from SCI was applied. The aim of the study was to determine the economically and operationally optimal drive technologies against the background of the existing and future infrastructure of various networks, for example with regard to charging and refuelling processes.

Market development in German commuter rail sector

Customer: International consulting firm

On behalf of an international consulting firm, SCI Verkehr analysed the development of tenders for commuter rail services in Germany. In addition to an analysis of all known and planned tenders by the contracting authorities, SCI Verkehr also performed an allocation of the commuter rail vehicles currently in operation. An overview of the contract standards of all German contracting authorities was complemented by a differentiation by gross contracts and net contracts.

Process optimisation at a logistics site

Customer: Global player in the food industry

A central production and logistics site of our client showed ongoing logistical deficits: long waiting and processing times for lorries and out-of stock situations affected the performance of the site. At the same time, the client intended to integrate a smaller site from the local area, in order to raise the performance of the site concerned. SCI Verkehr was commissioned by the company management to analyse the main hurdles for a better performance of the site, present ways for improvement and, in cooperation with the company, implement the required measures. The main aim was to accelerate processing times. For this purpose it was necessary to remodel the logistical processes, together with staff on site. As part of an "operational excellence process", the consultancy and support from SCI Verkehr largely aimed towards activating employee expertise at the site. In this way, the upcoming changes in staffing were communicated and established, enabling sustainable optimisation of processes.

Circle Line / Public-Private-Partnership in public rail transport

Customer: Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr AöR (Transportation authority)

"Circle Line" is the first rail transport project in Germany to be realised primarily as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). In a consortium comprising DEPFA BANK, the law firm Kapellmann und Partner and the engineering office Vössing GmbH, SCI Verkehr is subjecting the plans to a "PPP suitability test" and preparing the realisation of the first construction phase up to the tendering procedure. SCI Verkehr is carrying out the project management and market research as well as addressing potential interested parties.
