The worldwide fleet of electric buses increased from approximately 340,000 units in 2018 to 480,000 in 2020. The demand for electric buses has been driven by the prospect of reducing air pollution in large cities, increasing compatibility with the environment and the compliance with national and international climate regulations. Strengthening public transport infrastructure is often an integral part of affected cities, including an ever-growing number of cities that have announced their transition to a zero emission bus fleet.
The electrification rates of bus fleets are still at very low levels, especially outside China. In the Asian country and frontrunner of the electric bus markets, it reaches 18% of the total bus fleet.
Although a decrease in procurement prices was predicted for electric buses for a long time, it did not materialise for multiple reasons. Progress in technology is still evolving dynamically, in particular concerning range and size of buses, with increasing double-decker and articulated buses being electrified.
