The comprehensive ETCS roll-out in Europe currently varies greatly from country to country. While member states of the European Union are obliged to implement ETCS on the European rail corridors by 2030, some are going beyond that with setting themselves the target of fully equipping their rail network with ETCS, such as Belgium, the Czech Republic and Italy. However, large railway markets such as Germany, France or Poland very hesitant about equipping the entire area and it will need considerable additional effort for them to meet the target of implementing ETCS on their core networks.

The newly published study analyses the current status of wayside and on-board equipment in nine focus countries as well as in the European market as a whole. Although a significant increase in the level of equipment is forecasted by 2034, it will take considerably longer until the system is uniformly used in all European markets and promises and benefits of full implementation can be realised.

In concrete terms, this market study includes:

  1. An examination of the European market for ETCS equipment - both trackside and on-board
  2. An analysis of nine core markets as well as the remaining country markets as a synopsis. The analyses are based on concrete project planning in the individual markets, programmes and plans for future equipment and a derived estimate of the market sizes and their development
  3. A differentiated analysis by type of transport for rolling stock: high-speed trains, locomotives, multiple units
  4. A presentation of the respective market sizes in unit or kilometre numbers and turnover values
