Development of a market entry strategy for double-deck passenger coaches

Following on from an analysis of the European rolling stock market, SCI Verkehr developed a market entry strategy for double-deck passenger coaches on behalf of a globally active rolling stock manufacturer. The strategic recommendation was based upon the product portfolio already existing, taking into consideration the railway companies, regional transport authorities and existing competitive products. As a result, a basic vehicle was defined which incorporates the main technical and economic success criteria for double-deck rolling stock.

Despite all hopes for vehicle standardisation, light rail vehicles and trams are still being procured in small lot sizes and to individual specifications. The classic manufacturing concepts are often insufficient for this. The project involves assessing the marketability of a new vehicle construction strategy through systematic analysis of the customer requirements and concepts by means of a multi-stage survey. SCI Verkehr is deriving from this the chances and risks of such a business model, examining the structural and technical design of the vehicle concept using customer requirements and also evaluating the profitability. SCI Verkehr conducts an extensive analysis of the locomotives and their supply and demand and also evaluates the service of such locomotives in various European countries.

BEMU market analysis

Customer: European rolling stock lessor

SCI Verkehr has conducted a market study on the topic of battery multiple units (BEMU) on behalf of a major European lessor. In particular, the supply and demand side as well as possible risk factors in the procurement of a BEMU fleet were examined. Part of the analysis is the consideration of re-deployment scenarios after 15 years as well as an explicit vehicle evaluation according to the IVS standard.

Economic evaluation of rolling stock

Since vehicles themselves can serve as assets in the financing of railway vehicles, thus making favourable financing options possible, ascertaining their economic value is extremely important. SCI Verkehr examined the worldwide market for rolling stock in order to determine the benefits, territorial possibilities, and costs related to recycling used railway vehicles. Rail-mounted vehicles of different categories were put to a general LCC/RAM analysis, added by verifying well-known used vehicle transactions. The results were based both on the evaluation of secondary sources and interviews with experts. The study?s objective was a standardized evaluation for assets.

Extension of a port terminal

A terminal for combined transport in a German domestic port was to be rehabilitated and extended. SCI Verkehr prepared the application for public funding. The need for the measure was justified, competition to other terminals and economic efficiency analysed. Customer: A North Rhine-Westphalian branch representation of the logistics industry, initiated by the state government

With the NRW.LOGISTIKINDEX, SCI Verkehr provides a quarterly evaluation of business surveys in the transport and logistics sector based on the monthly survey of the SCI Logistikbarometer. The focus of the evaluation is on the comparison of data from the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Restructuring logistical processes at a production site

Our client took over a site previously operated by a service provider and at the beginning of 2008 integrated it into its network of sites across Germany. This integration included major changes to the processes and the IT system which had to be adapted to the requirements of the new owner. At the same time, the production and distribution volume increased substantially, as well as production exchange with other sites. These changes led to overworking and uncertainty among staff and consequently considerable deficits in the site?s performance. Within the scope of the "operational excellence" process, SCI Verkehr led and accompanied the modelling of new logistical processes with staff and company management. The consultancy process focused on using the existing employee know-how in order to achieve a higher level of acceptance for the necessary changes and thus a sustainable improvement of performance. Following SCI Verkehr?s ?Operational Excellence Tool?, the staff were involved in reviewing the current situation and developing improved processes in accordance with a tried and tested process. In addition, the task involved coaching the logistical managers at the site and thus cementing the new structures.
